Health tech innovations which are truly changing healthcare

11 – Skills for Health | UK

Skills for Health is a charitable organisation which supports the NHS with workforce development, recruitment, and retention initiatives through its research and consultancy division and a suite of digital solutions.

At the time of publication, 65 NHS Trusts have used its e-rostering system to safely roster junior doctors, ensuring that they are protected from working excessive hours and do not miss out on educational opportunities or pose a risk to patient safety.

Skills for Health’s online learning management tool LearnSpace is also widely adopted across the sector. It enables the NHS and private healthcare providers alike to ensure staff training remains up to date and compliant.

In 2021, LearnSpace supported the Covid-19 vaccination booster campaign by helping NHS Professionals, the largest NHS flexible staff bank, to quickly and safely onboard 8,000 team members.

During the pandemic, Skills for Health created a mobile and interactive training solution to meet the increased demands on our key workers.

Since its launch on March 25, 2020, the Covid-19 Awareness Course had registrations from over 58,000 professionals from our NHS, health, care and wider public sector workforce.

12 – Gynesonics | USA

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of patients awaiting elective treatments has never been so high. Gynaecology waiting lists have grown by 60% – a greater proportion than any other area of medicine – leaving over 570,000 women across the UK waiting to be seen by a healthcare professional.

The Sonata System by Gynesonics, is the world’s first and only intrauterine fibroid ablation system that combines the safety of ultrasound guidance with the proven benefits of targeted radio frequency energy,  all in one trans-cervical, incision-less procedure.

Sonata uses an intrauterine ultrasound hand piece to locate and target the individual fibroids.

Radio frequency energy is delivered to shrink the fibroid over time and reduce symptoms. The fibroids are treated from inside the uterus, requiring no incisions in the abdomen, no tissue to be cut or surgically removed, and the uterus is preserved.

A clinical study found that 50% of those treated with Sonata returned to normal activity the day after the procedure and returned to work after an average of 3.6 days.

In addition, 92% of patients did not require surgical re-intervention for heavy menstrual bleeding and 94% of patients were satisfied with their treatment.

It is currently being offered at a growing number of hospitals across the UK, giving clinicians the potential to treat a greater number of women in an outpatient setting and in doing so, relieve the backlog in elective surgery as a result of COVID-19.
