According to Maggie Michalczyk, RDN, pre-made trail mix bags often contain added oils, potentially even partially hydrogenated oils. “Instead, I like making my own by combining walnuts, dark chocolate chips, pumpkin seeds, and air-popped popcorn for a sweet and salty mix. Walnuts contain a beneficial mix of plant-based protein and good fats including polyunsaturated fats like omega-3 that help with fullness and pumpkin seeds contain beneficial magnesium.”

12. Foods With Sugar Alcohols

Sugar alcohols—such as xylitol, erythritol, sorbitol, and maltitol—are often found in bars, candy, and other products labeled “sugar free” or “no sugar added.”

“Sugar alcohols are partially resistant to digestion and when consumed in high quantities can cause digestive upset and diarrhea,” says Michalczyk (yikes). “As someone with a sensitive stomach, I avoid all foods with sugar alcohols.
